 "I'm Lovin' it" 2009-09-23
By Fredo L. Espinosa
I've been looking for ways to improve my health and lifestyle. By staying active I have to keep my body hydrated. By doing so, I end up having a recycle bin full of use-once-toss-away water bottles. In an effort to think green, I had to stop buying bottled water. I found out that it takes 2/3 more energy to recycle plastic, so it's not really a good way to conserve energy. So I started to look for a smarter and more eco-logical solution. I quickly installed an inexpensive water filtration system to my faucet. The missing ingredient was a reusable bottle to carry with me. I required something large, stylish, and lightweight. Then I bought a Nalgene polycarbonate bottle. Everything was good, until I found out that the bottle leached BPA. BPA causes many harmful effects when ingested, especially to children. Go to:(http://www.treehugger.com/files/2008/04/bpa-in-water.php).This prompted me to put the Nalgene polycarbonate bottle in the recycle bin.

Soon after, I got a Klean Kanteen stainless steel bottle. Klean Kanteen claims to have the healthiest and safest bottle on the market. Quality stainless steel doesn't require a liner like aluminum, and is neutral to flavors and odors. Their bottle has a "rounded" corner at the outer edge, which gave me a smooth surface to drink from. I thought that the roll-out lip was a nice feature, until I washed the bottle a few times. The roll-out design created a hard-to-clean space or gap for things like soap, dirt, and protein powder to get stuck in. Even though the bottle was dishwasher safe, the gap was hard to keep clean. Since I didn't want my lips to touch this area, I had to keep searching for another alternative.

Then I came across an all aluminum bottle from SIGG. It seemed like the logical choice because it was very popular, and SIGG claimed that their bottles were eco-friendly and BPA-free. The slim neck is easy to drink from, however it was not wide enough to put in ice cubes. There are gaps in the top and bottom of the aluminum insert of the bottle neck. These gaps may or may not be visible, especially the bottom one. Harmful bacteria is also found to grow there when the bottle is not cleaned thoroughly. It's was not to hard to detect, because there was an odor inside the bottle after washing it multiple times. Recently, there has been a media frenzy about SIGG bottles containing BPA in their lining. The article states that SIGG admitted that there was BPA in their liner, after previously denying it. Since I value honesty, I chose to switch to another brand. Go to:(http://www.examiner.com/x-9660-SF-Child-Safety-Examiner~y2009m9d1-SIGG-admits-bottles-contain-BPA). I recycled the aluminum bottle as well, because I no longer feel safe with SIGG.

The good news is, I finally found a bottle that has all the right ingredients. I discovered the new Koozio classic hydration bottle. The double layer lip is welded, so there is no gap or groove to worry about. The 18/8 food-grade stainless steel bottle has no design flaw. Its 100% leak proof, BPA-free, and it's easy to clean. I use the versatile 34 oz. bottle for hydration everyday. I carry the Koozio everywhere I go, even on vacation. The water always tastes fresh and doesn't contain any odors. I am able to use it for my protein shakes, as well. I don't have to worry about any unsealed areas like the other bottles. In addition, I end up drinking more water everyday because its always next to me. Not only do I have a healthier life, I'm promoting an eco-friendly lifestyle for others too. I just got my Koozio bottle a few of weeks ago and I'm already loving it. I definitely recommend it.
